Mile 173.7 - segments 9/10

Isaiah 23 - 24

Today was an action packed day.  I started out early again, covering several easy miles before I cut off the trail to head into Leadville (the highest incorporated city in the country) for a resupply mid morning. I was able to catch a ride into town from a couple of section hikers and headed to Safeway to top off my food bag.

While in town, I checked out the famous Melanzana store, where world renowned “Melly” hoodies are exclusively made.  They were a little rich for my blood, and I didn’t want to carry the extra weight anyway, so I passed on the opportunity.  Soon after, my friend Micah contacted me and arranged to meet after lunch.  He had just done a 5 mile climb to the top of nearby Mt. Elbert, the 2nd highest mountain in the contiguous United States.  After scaling the mountain, he picked me up and shuttled me to the trail, where we parted ways after some quick refreshments.

Tomorrow I come to the trail split at Twin Lakes where I have to take the Collegiate West or Collegiate East.  My original plan was to take the West route, as it’s more remote and scenic.  However, looking at the terrain strategically (or is it tactically), I now think it makes more sense to go East.  I’m afraid that the West route with its 13,000+ peaks could make for a longer period before I’m in a position to resupply again, as well as being several days from civilization if there is a problem.  So, the East makes the most sense for me at this point, but we’ll see how I feel tomorrow.

Until next time…
